Early Life
Jessica Claire Biel was born on March 3rd, 1982, in Ely, Minnesota, United States. Her father, Jon, is a Entrepreneur, who was working as Program Director for the Minnesota Outward Bound School at the time and her mother Kimberly is a homemaker. Her family is of German, French, English and Native American (Choctaw) heritage. She has a younger brother, Justin, born in 1985. Her fathers work meant that the family relocated a lot during her childhood, living in Texas, Connecticut and Woodstock, Illinois, before finally settling in Boulder, Colorado.
Biel initially trained to be a vocalist, and starred in several musicals, playing lead roles in productions such as Annie, The Sound of Music and Beauty and the Beast. She also began modelling in her teens and appeared in commercials for products such as Deluxe Paint and Pringles. At age 14, after auditioning for several television pilots, Biel was cast as the oldest daughter, Mary, in the WB family drama, 7th Heaven. She would go on to appear in six season of the Emmy-nominated show. Career Highlights After impressing in her first season of 7th Heaven, Biel landed her first feature film role, playing Peter Fonda's granddaughter in the critically-acclaimed drama Ulee's Gold, released in 1997. Her performance as the gothic, rebellious teenager, Casey, earned her a Best Supporting Actress win at the Young Artist Award. After leaving 7th Heaven at the end of the sixth season, in 2002, Biel was cast as the lead heroine, Erin Hardesty, in the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The film was met with mixed reviews by critics, but became a box office success, scoring the number one spot in its opening week in the U.S. and going on to Gross over $100,000,000 worldwide.
Biel's big breakthrough came in 2006 when she played a turn-of-the-century duchess in the period piece, The Illusionist, co-starring Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti. The movie received mostly-positive reviews, and was a turning point for Biel, who had previously played more contemporary roles. She was awarded the Rising Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and won an Achievement Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival for her performance as Duchess Sophie von Teschen. In 2007 Biel made two films. The first, Next, a science fiction movie based on the 1954 Novel The Golden Man by Philip K. Dick saw her nominated for a Teen Choice Award as Choice Movie Actress. That summer saw the release of I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (a.k.a. Chuck and Larry). The Adam Sandler and Kevin James comedy received poor reviews but was still a box office success grossing just under $200,000,000 worldwide by the end of the year. In 2008, Biel signed on to play a stripper in Powder Blue. Also starring Forest Whitaker (who is producing the film) Ray Liotta and Patrick Swayze the film is due to be released in early 2009.
