Early Life
Megan Denise Fox was born on May 16th, 1986 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States. She is the youngest of two daughters born to Darlene Tonachio and Franklin Foxx, who dropped the second "x" from his surname. Fox’s parents divorced when she was young and she and her sister, Kirstie, were raised by her mother and her stepfather in Kingston, Tennessee. There she attended Kingston Elementary school, where she was a member of the school’s chorus and the swim team, and attended drama and dance classes at the local community center. When Fox was ten the family moved to Florida, first living in St.Petersburg and later settling in Port Lucie where she attended Morningside Academy, a private Catholic middle school, and later St. Lucie West Centennial High School. She began modeling in her early teens, winning several awards at the 1999 American Modeling and Talent Convention held in Hilton Head, South Carolina, and was a member of the high school cheerleading squad. Fox made her acting debut at the age of sixteen when she was cast in the Direct-to-DVD film Holiday in the Sun, which starred Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The following year she decided to leave Florida and moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in film.
Career Highlights
In 2002 Fox landed the role as Ione Star on the Swedish-American soap opera Ocean Ave. The series lasted two seasons, from 2002-2003 and Fox appeared in 122 episodes. During this time she also guest-starred on The WB series What I Like About You, appearing in the episode "Like a Virgin (Kinda)", and had a extra role in Bad Boys II. In 2004 Fox made her film debut with a supporting role in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. The comedy starring Lindsay Lohan, saw Fox play Carla Santini a popular girl who is a high school rival of Lohan’s character Lola. Despite mostly negative critical reception, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen did moderately well at the box office, grossing $29 million domestically and $34 million worldwide. The same year saw Fox guest-star on the hit CBS comedy Two and a Half Men, appear in a made for television film, Crimes Of Fashion, and replace Nicole Paggi as Sydney Shanowski on the ABC sitcom Hope & Faith. Fox appeared in 36 episodes during seasons two and three, until the show was cancelled in 2006.
In 2007 she had her big break in Hollywood when she was cast in the lead female role of Mikaela Banes in Michael Bay’s live-action film Transformers. Mikaela is the love interest of Shia LaBeouf’s character Sam Witwicky, a teenager caught up in the war between the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons, two factions of alien robots. The movie gained positive reviews from the critics and became a huge hit with audiences, being named the fifth most successful movie of the year, grossing over $700 million worldwide. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards and won four awards from the Visual Effects Society. For her role, Fox was nominated for the best "Breakthrough Performance" at the MTV Movie Awards and received three Teen Choice Award nominations in the categories "Choice Movie Actress: Action Adventure", "Choice Movie: Breakout Female", and "Choice Movie: Liplock".
Her first 2008 release was How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, a comedy based upon British writer Toby Young’s 2001 memoir of the same name. The film was directed by Robert B. Weide and stars Simon Pegg in the lead role as a aspiring British journalist who lands a dream job at a upscale magazine in New York City. Fox had a supporting role in the film as Sophie a budding actress and the object of Young’s lust. The film opened as the UK’s box office number one, mainly due to the popularity of Pegg in the UK, but was poorly received in the US. This was followed by an appearance alongside Rumer Willis, as the character Lost, in Whore. The plot of the movie follows a group of teens living on the streets of Hollywood who are forced to sleep with movie producers in a attempt to break into the film industry. The drama received very little promotion and was considered a box-office failure.
In 2009, Fox reprised her role as mechanic Mikaela Banes in the Michael Bay’s second Transformers movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The plot is a progression of the previous release and sees Shia LaBeouf continuing his battle against the evil Decepticons. Despite mostly negative critical reception the film grossed $108.9 million in its first weekend of release, making it the seventh-largest in history. As of September 2009 it had grossed over $830 million worldwide. This was followed by a appearance as the title character in the dark comedy/horror Jennifer’s Body. Fox portrays a popular teenage cheerleader possessed by a demon who begins killing her male classmates in a small Minnesota farming town. The film received mixed reviews from the critics.
