Early Life
Scarlett Johansson was born November 22nd, 1984 in New York City, New York, U.S. Her father, Karsten, is a Danish-born architect and her mother, Melanie Sloan, a producer, comes from a Polish Jewish family from the Bronx. The pair separated when Scarlett was 13. She has an older sister, Vanessa, who is also an actress; an older brother, Adrian and a twin brother, Hunter, who is also an actor.
Johannson grew up in New York City where she attended the P.S. 41 elementary school in Greenwich Village. Johansson began acting during childhood, after her mother, who is now her agent, began taking her to auditions. Her acting career began when she was eight in the off-Broadway production of Sophistry with Ethan Hawke at New York's Playwrights Horizons. In 2002 she graduated from the Professional Children's School in Manhattan.
Career Highlights
She made her film debut in 1994's North and had small parts in several films during the late 1990’s including Just Cause(1995) and Home Alone 3(1997). Johansson’s big break came when she was 14 after she was cast in Robert Redford’s acclaimed film The Horse Whisperer. She received critical praise and worldwide recognition for her portrayal of the disabled teenager Grace MacLean. The film was a box office hit and grossed $187 million worldwide.
In 2003 she won the "Upstream Prize" for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in the Oscar winning comedy-drama Lost in Translation opposite Bill Murray. The same year, she was nominated for two Best Actress awards at the Golden Globes, one for Lost in Translation and one for the British drama Girl with a Pearl Earring. She was also nominated for Best Actress for both films at the BAFTAs, and won Best Actress for Lost in Translation.
In July 2005, Johansson starred with Ewan McGregor in Michael Bay's Science Fiction Thriller The Island, making her debut as a female lead in a mainstream film. In the same year, she starred as American actress Nola Rice in the Woody Allen-directed drama Match Point, which opened in December. Johansson received her fourth Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the role.
In 2006 she appeared in Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia, a film noir shot in Los Angeles and Bulgaria. Johansson has noted that she was a De Palma fan and had wanted to work with him on the film, even though she thought that she was "physically wrong" for the part. 2006 also saw Scarlett appear with Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman in the period film The Prestige directed by Christopher Nolan, with a screenplay adapted from Christopher Priest's 1995 World Fantasy Award-winning novel of the same name.
In 2008 she starred in the British drama film The Other Boleyn Girl. Johansson played the role of Mary Boleyn the one-time mistress of King Henry VIII played by Eric Bana. Although the film was generally regarded as a success many British commentators criticized the casting of Johansson, an American, as a historical British figure. The same year saw Scarlett release her debut album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, in May. The album featured guest vocals from David Bowie, who also appeared in The Prestige, and peaked at # 1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart.
